Nic: Challenge? Eh, I really don’t know. This is not one particular thing. It’s just overall.
A: is there any type of music you would want to do besides rock? There is a little bit of hip-hop in your recent albums.
Nic: Yeah. That’s a little fusion with more electronic staff instead of just the old fashion band.
A: It seems to me that every album I listened to is always different, and to me, that seems like a challenge.
Nic: Eh, I guess that’s also to reflect on what kind state of mind I am in at that time. I don’t like being repetitive and I guess that told what I was like.
A: Because besides rock music, there is a little bit of classical instrumental pieces. Do you think you will ever use like Chinese traditional instruments in your music?
Nic: I hope so. I really do hope so. I have always being finding new sounds all over the world. That’s why I went to six different countries to record the last Cantonese album. And we found the Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing which allowed me to do the recording in San Francisco Orchestra in my album to fuse hard rock with classical staff. I hope to find, like what we call “二胡” or some of the really main instruments in China.
A: So I just want to kind of asking your acting a little bit and directing actually because you just directed a film.
Nic: A short film, yeah.
A: How was that?
Nic: That was a hustle, a big hustle.
A: Really? What got you start on directing?
Nic: That was just my friend and I, my friend Steven Fong. He records a lot of staff by digital-video camera when we are wakeboarding having fun. And he is really into movies and editing and producing things like that. But I guess we had this chance Fong had last year sometime, eh, I think it was the beginning of this year which start that, you know it’s a chance for lifetime. I don’t know who would give us a few million dollars to invest on us for doing such things, so which really took a chance and had fun. And from now on I respect directors because it’s really tough.
A: So how long did it take you?
Nic: 4 or 20 minute short film will took us 7 or 8 days, only shooting and pre-production, post-production, so altogether, I guess, about 20 days.
A: So you found all the people yourself and how did you casting?
Nic: We cast…. Well, actually I used one of my friend’s assistance because he didn’t cost anything. And second he has looks which fit our character.
A: So do you want to do it again, directing?
Nic: No, I won’t think of it, because…
A: Time-consuming?
Nic: Not only time-consuming. I don’t really mind the time-consuming part. It’s being responsible for the whole set, for each thing, from lighting to speech dialogue, the pace of the whole thing, to the camera movement, to “excuse me, can we have lunch?” That’s pain and …
A: So do you think that has some influence on your music, though?
Nic: Eh, I did write a song for that. It’s called Viva Dragon and for the whole movie theme. It’s funny. It’s great experience. It switches your places, so now I do think directors’ point of view, so perhaps love them better.
A: So it’s a challenge for you?
Nic: Yeah, a big challenge.
A: Yeah, totally different. Do you think yourself an actor or a singer?
Nic: I hope it’s a musician. Yeah, if I can not sing, I compose and I play guitar, or at least sing what I want to sing about, then I would rather not be a singer.
A: Your fans say that your songs really encourage them and it’s very healing and comforting when they go through tough time.
Nic: That’s great to hear.
A: Yeah, it’s really is.
