Anchor: So I hear you make music for other people as well.
Nic: Yeah.
A: Is that when you are making music for them, is it different like mentally?
Nic: It’s different. It depends on what you want to achieve. If you want to achieve your own style, then you just give out some of your very typical Nicholas style. But if you want to achieve some new styles or just try to experiment on how you attack your music, that’s a different point of view. But I think that is, actually the most fun of doing it, because sometimes I ask myself that I get their applause for who I am or really for my work or my performance when I am on the stage. That is in the gray area. But when you are sitting down in front of a stage, watching some others perform your music, then you know if their applause is really for the music itself, the performance because you do it from another point of view, from an audience’s point of view. It makes me feel better.
A: How much of that have you done?
Nic: I’ve done maybe 30 or so.
A: Oh, that many?
A: It that from pop to rock, all ranges?
Nic: When I do music for other people, it’s mainly pop.
A: Really?
Nic: Yeah, because somehow they would request the typical hit song.
A: Do you have any kind of conflict doing that?
Nic: I used to. I used to think I don’t like to write too much pop. I don’t want to produce too much pop. But now I think if I can do…. For me now, good music is the music that moves the heart, no matter if it’s jazz to blues, or…. If that sort of music moves heart at any time, it’s good music. So I try to attack pop from that point of view now, which makes me feel a lot better, and which actually is the truth.
A: Because some people are just so keen on, you know, staying underground But if you want to stay underground, you are always beyond the ground. Because there is no challenge, there is no going beyond that point, you know. But music is always changing and you can see from that point of view, too. So I think it’s great. When you make music for yourself, is there certain kind of environment or you are in your state of mind. When does it come to your mind?
Nic: it comes to my mind when I …. I don’t know. There is not one certain specific time or state where I have to be in, in order to have these stimulations. When they come, they come. They come in bunches. But if they don’t, there is no way to force them out.
A: What about lyrics?
Nic: I can’s do lyrics because I left from 7 to Vancouver, when I was seven, so my Chinese is very poor.
A: So what do you speak usually?
Nic: Cantonese. I can speak (Chinese), but I can not read and I can not write.
A: Have you been practicing?
Nic: No, not really. I think I’ve improved since I came back, but it’s still pretty poor.
A: It’s so hard, though. I used to think Japanese is hard, but it (Chinese)’s worse.
Nic: It’s
A: That’s all. It’s just 漢字. So at least in Japanese you have Hiragana(打不了日语,只能打罗马音了,日语里是“片假名”的意思).
Nic: Yeah, Hiragana, which is just like pronunciation with alphabets, right? You can put them together. But when it comes to 漢字, it’s ….
A: It’s difficult?(打不出日语,弄成英文了···)
Nic: Yeah, it’s difficult.
A: I wish you will just come to Japan and be brought up there.
Nic: What?
A: Your Japanese. What’s the next thing you want to challenge?
